Design Project: a garbage crusher
This design project was part of my Bachelor degree at Industrial Design Engineering TU Delft. The assignment was to design a garbage crusher for consumer kitchen use and to construct a working prototype of this device. The project was done in a team of five.We came up with a garbage crusher that used two spindles to transfer the power from the electrical engine to the cans we required to crush. We used two spindles to create a symmetrical load. The spindles were connected to the motor through
a set of gear wheels and belts. The prototype was made from steel plate housed in vacuum formed plastic in the PMB workshop at the TU Delft.
The garbage crusher was designed to look user friendly by a using a reclining and round shape. It was made to look strong by making it big and showing its spindles. In the user testing phase the design proved adequately strong and easy to use.
My role in the project was in the design of the housing, the fitting of the mechanical parts to the housing, 3D modeling (Solidworks), design of a working prototype and cost calculation.
