Usability Testing and Redesign: an mp3 player for Philips
This design project was part of my Masters degree at Industrial Design Engineering TU Delft. The assignment was to explore a product, perform a usability test, to redesign the product, to perform a second usability test and evaluate the process. For the assignment we worked in a team of five.
We were given an audio player by Philips Consumer Electronics. We started with a current market analysis and then performed a usability test in the usability labs in the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. 6 Participants were asked to perform a series of common tasks. The results were captured on video and analyzed.
Based upon the test we came up with a new concept for a menu structure. This was an iterative process of idea generation, testing and adapting. Based upon the new menu we created a new, more tangible, interface and housing. The new design was tested in the lab using two models: a digital model using Director and a tangible model made from wood. In the second test new audio player was found to be more easy and intuitive to use by all participants.
My role in the project was in the analysis of the given product, design of the new product menu structure and modeling the menu structure using Director.
